DISCO NECTAR on BBC Radio One

I was asked to do a phone interview about the night for this week's BBC Introducing with Bethan Elfyn. I also had the privelege of choosing three tunes to play which were: To London by Falty DL (Ramp), Death Tunnel by Black Meteoric Star (DFA) and Specialise by The Hidden Persuader (Bass4Bots). Almost a whole year ago, a mysterious new club night called Disco Nectar emerged on the Cardiff scene bringing Clone records star Orgue Electronique to the unexpected venue of a pub function room in the city centre where scenes of uncontrollable jackin' ensued. He was followed by a string of other exciting guest Djs and artists such as Syntheme (Planet Mu), Legowelt, Dj Guy, Placid, Joe Hart and a quality acts from the South Wales scene namely Orcop, Valley Lines and the Access Tonal Communications collective. Now a monthly night at Underone Basement, Disco Nectar celebrates its first birthday with an Italo Disco special brought to you by DJ Benetti.
Dj Benetti:

William Bennett, of Experimental Noise band Whitehouse, joins us under his Disco moniker. Expect Giorgio Moroder-esque space synths, New Wave electronic drums and irresistibly infectious melodies. Having made his DJ debut under the alias Benetti at a Mafia-controlled pizza restaurant in 1980, Benetti is now renowned as one of the unsung pioneers of the Italo sound. Most recently dropping his disco diamonds an the Bloc Weekender he has played at Cocadisco (London) a record 6 times in addition to his residency at italoBLACK in Edinburgh and the monthly Disco Caligula parties, delivering magical musical odysseys that have enchanted both Italo initiates and hardcore cognoscenti every time.

Disco Nectar vs. Body Hammer 16/04/09

This month, Disco Nectar teams up with London's almighty Body Hammer bringing you the best Electro, Acid, Jack and Disco that you'll probably ever hear.With BH resident and promoterJoe Hart having played at the launch party last year, and the two nights booking legends such as Legowelt and Orgue Electronique resepectively, it was only a matter of time before we hooked up.

JOE HART
The brains behind Body Hammer, an underground night in the real sense of the word taking place at secret late-night E2 jackin' zones and office blocks. Joe's sets are heavily influenced by the sound of WBX Radio and The Hague Electro scene. He is also a BLOC resident; you may have seen him standing in for Metro Area at this year's festival.

PAUL PURGAS
Paul is a resident at Body Hammer as well as one half of experimental techno duo, Emptyset, releasing on Future Days and Caravan. Originally from Wales, we're pleased to welcome him back to unleash some of his fine Acid House records on the citizens of Cardiff.

Lee Marshall who releases warm electronica and bassy electro on Urban Planning Records is back, but this time as a DJ.

SYNCHRONOISE
He's probably being playing records since before you were born, so listen up kids. Electrofunk, Italo, Hip-House and Acid.

C++
Former promoter of Reload and Machine Meadow, he's played at every wedding, fourtieth birthday party and village disco you can imagine but vinyl freak C++'s first true love is electro, and doesn't he know it. He might play dubstep if you ask nicely :-)

The party will happen at our usual monthly venue, Undertone Basement (uner 10ft Tall) on Church Street, Cardiff. We're open from 10pm-4am and we'll charge you a meagre £4 for the privelege.

April update

Thanks massively to everyone who made it to our last event! For those of you who didn't attend you missed a fine liveset by UNscene who played some of his best stuff I've heard to date. You may have heard UNscene bashing out bass heavy electro under his Hidden Persuader moniker, most recently supporting Luke Vibert in Cardiff. This set had quite a different sound and I was seriously impressed by this guy's genre-melding collection of tunes ranging from warm, melodic downtempo techno reminiscent of Boards of Canada, through to jerky electro culminating in some rinsed out jungle. Go Bob! UNscene was followed by our guest Djs from Bristol, The Kelly Twins (Dan and Sean) playing two hours of ace tunes back to back. This was an eclectic set, as was expected including some fine electro classics, italo disco, Acid and Chicago house . At one point, everyone in the club was dancing. Nice work!

The Kelly Twins: The Bristol based duo will provide us with some retro-style party sounds blending electro, synthpop, chi-town, hip house, acid, miami bass and italo. The Kelly Twins promote South West electro institution, UFO and co-promote Bristol clubnight, Best Before at which they are residents.

We went to BLOC !

Never have I seen so much great electronic music compressed into only three days so this is just very quick round up (have probably left a lot out!) of what went down apart from fish and chips, boozing, chalet hopping, slot machines and waterslides . Friday was a veritable dubstep fest, which was to be expected with the venue being closer to Bristol this year,. The two main rooms showcased Kode 9, Pinch, Peverelist and 2562, which I thoroughly enjoyed apart from the slightly annoying MC. Put a sock in it and let us listen to those tunes. Daniel Bell was ace and provided some techno relief at the end of the night with some really deep, hypnotic sounds. Things were cranked up a bit on Saturday with more electro and techno on the agenda, but only after listening to more dubstep in the form of the superb Bass Clef. What this guy can do with a trombone, a radio transistor and a sampler never fails to impress. Egyptian Lover’s djing skills are simply ace and caused me to dance like an utter loon to some old skool electro sounds. I somehow managed to miss DJ Godfather altogether as I was bopping away to Rob Hood. In fact I didn’t make it to the JAK Bar room until Sunday for some reason or another and that’s where DJ Bennetti (one half of Whitehouse) played under his italo moniker. The tunes being played can only be described as Power Italo anthems and he is cool enough to get away with dropping Boys by Sabrina. What a man. Other Italo highlights included I.F who’s DJing has admittedly become slightly more cheesy than it used to be but that’s not a bad thing if you ask me and the Miami Vice fancy dress theme added to the eighties feel. Was also great to hear him play his own signature production, Space Invaders, on a large sound system. Alexander Robotnik played a more techno orientated set than expected so I decided to rest my legs for later. Metro Area failed to show allowing Joe Hart to take centre stage instead. Carl Craig didn’t fail to deliever ending things on a high by dropping plenty of classics, which kept everyone wanting more despite three days of solid partying. Good work! All in all, this was a top weekend. Great tunes, great people, Was good to see so many Disco Nectar regulars and DJs present namely Synchronoise, C++ , The Hidden Persuader, Nanobot and Richard Carnage not mention plenty of familiar faces and friends from the Cardiff and Bristol scene. You know who you are! Big Love to you all. BLOC 2010: Bring it.

Disco Nectar goes Ghetto : 21.03.08

Disco Nectar is thrilled to welcome DJ Guy, Europe’s leading booty turntablist and the man behind the Global Fire record label for what may be Cardiff's first proper Ghettotech night. Greatly influenced by Detroit DJs such as DJ Godfather, DJ Assault and the late Disco D, he’s known for his fun quick-fire mixing and genre-crossing sets.

He was formerly one half of the Non Stop DJs duo who came to the attention of booty fans across the globe in 2003 with their infamous “All Cylinders” mix, featuring over 112 tracks mixed, scratched and juggled together. In 2004 Non Stop DJs released their first 12?, the “Furious EP”, to a huge response for a debut release, with airplay on the UK’s BBC Radio 1, DJ support around the world from the likes of DJ Godfather and DJ Rolando, heavy radio play in Detroit, and electro & techno heavyweight Dave Clarke placing the EP at the #1 spot in his electro chart.

The duo cranked things up with the follow up “Retarded EP” which featured a world first; 5 point “Ghetto Locks” - locked grooves with 5 beats per revolution (which means that they can be played at typically fast Ghettotech mixing speeds) and which line up together so DJs can leap from groove to groove without skipping a beat.

DJ Guy went solo in 2007 and started the Global Fire record label to release records by a variety of artists, alongside his own material. There have been two releases so far, with more on the way.

Reflecting the mix of styles that he spins in his DJ sets, DJ Guy also releases Baltimore Club influenced tracks as Dikulous with his U Know What To Doo included on the super-fast selling Dress 2 Sweat Vol. 1 12? alongside tracks from Rustie and Pistol Pete. He’s also performed remix work for Deekline & DJ Assault and for Disque Primeur’s Goon & Koyote on their “Wellness Is Wild” EP. His mixing has taken him to cities around the world, including a performance at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF) in 2008. Check out some of his mixes for yourself:

We're also pleased to welcome PLACID who is something of a legend on the Bristol party scene having been Djing for over 20 years. He is currently a resident at Bristol clubnight under_score and has not long completed a US tour. PLACID has also recently played at I LOVE ACID and BLEEP 43 in London. Thanks to everyone who made it down to Disco Nectar #4 at Undertone Basement last Saturday. It's pretty safe to say that everyone had a top night with a cracking liveset from Underpass playing tunes ranging from warm, melodic electronica through to more bassy dancefloor electro. If you're lucky enough to be visiting Berlin, catch him Djing at Raumklang on March 20th. Richard Carnage "Bristolled" things up nicely, not by exposing any cleavage, but by dropping some fine dubstep mixed with UK Funky and Tech-house. The new venue has a great soundsystem and is a wicked little space to have a party so there'll be many more nights to look forward to for sure. Disco Nectar to host Room 2 @The Holodeck

This month, Disco Nectar will host Room 2 at the long running Cardiff Techno night, The Holodeck. We're thrilled to welcome back Orcop after a cracking liveset at SWN festival as well as Ollie Vaughaun (ABexe) playing his first live Electro laptop set. Our residents C++ and Synchronoise will provide plenty of your favourite Electro, Acid and Chicago House tunes as well as anything else that might take their fancy. With the genre melding Luke Vibert (Warp/Planet Mu/Ninja Tune) headlining in the main room and Access Tonal Communications supporting, this is one Holodeck you cannot afford to miss. Arrive early to guarantee entry.

Monthly Saturdays in 2009!

Here's some great news to begin the year: from February 21st, fledgling Cardiff club night, Disco Nectar will take place on the third Saturday of every month at our new venue, Undertone Basement (underneath 10ft Tall on Church Street). In 2008, Disco Nectar was responsible for exposing your ears to some seriously quality electronic sounds bringing the likes of Hague legends, Legowelt and Orgue Electronique as well as Planet Mu's Syntheme to the Welsh capital. We also hosted some of the best up and coming talent from the local scene: The Hidden Persuader, Valley Lines, Orcop and Info_Cifon. Guest DJs included BLOC resident Joe Hart who promotes Body Hammer in London, NONOM Exeter resident, Mike Nanobot, and Acid Casuals' Cian Ciaran AKA PAPS. That's not bad for only three events.

Underpass writes fractured electro and warm electronica.The Underpass sound is dense, atmospheric, often claustraphobic, pulling in strands of detroit electro, contemporary electronica and the nascient strains of dub, underpinned with a b-boy sensibility.

His incendiary live laptop sets have taken him around the country, with the likes of Cylob [warp], Lektrogirl [rephlex], Max Tundra [warp], Kode 9 [rephlex], Acid Casuals [novamute], Kutchi [adcam], Boep [adcam], Sh!tmat [planet mu], Con Brio, Bovaflux, Rich Thair [of red snapper], Steve Hellier [death in vegas] and Johnny Boy [novamute] amongst others.
